Solina, Ontario - Also know as Eldad, Ontario
by Marguerite Fraser

His son Louis lived to be more than 100 years old.

His eldest son Jordan, Jr., ran away from home when he
was only 16 years old because his father was extremely
angry at him. He crossed illegally into the United States,
and spent some time in the gold fields of California.  He later
married and settled on a farm near Johnstown, Pennsylvania
around 1905.  His wife died giving birth to their 10th child.
Jordan, Jr. never forget his childhood home, and described it
in great detail to his children and grandchildren.  In 1969 his
grandchildren went to Solina and found the house.

From an obituary from The Sanilac Jeffersonian Newspaper:
Croswell, Michigan, Friday, June 01, 1906

"Barney VanNest and Mrs. Stephen Curvin Pass Away"

"Two very sudden deaths have occurred in Croswell during
the past week.  The first was that of Barney Van Nest
who expired while doing some trading in P.L. Graham's store
last Saturday evening.  Mr. Van Nest was remarking to
Mr. Dexter  a few minutes before his death that he was
feeling  especially well and appeared to be in good health.
While standing at the counter talking he suddenly
sank down and by the time the clerks reached his side he had
passed away.  Heart failure was the cause of his sudden
taking off.  "Mr. Van Nest was a pioneer of Lexington
township coming here from Canada in 1849.  During the
past twenty years he has resided in Croswell moving here
from his farm.  He was born in Laborough, Ontario, March 6,
1823 and was therefore past 83 years of age at the time
of his death. June 24, 1855, he was married to Miss Elizabeth
Arnot, a daughter of Robert J. Arnot, deceased.  From
this union there were five sons and five daughters;
three of the former and all of the latter together with
his wife survive him. Mr. Van Nest was a remarkably
industrious man.  Even on the afternoon of his death
he had been working in his garden in which
he always took a great deal of pride.  His sudden taking
off came as a shock to his family who had no idea of the
nearness of the end when he left his home for what turned
out to be the last time. for a man of his age he was very
active and was never heard to complain a great deal about
ill health. He commanded the respect of all who knew him
and in his passing the community loses a fine old gentleman
whose presence will be greatly missed.  The funeral was held
at the First Presbyterian church in this city Tuesday."

Ontario, Oct. 3, 1838, died at her home in Croswell,
December 12, 1907, aged 69 years, 2 months and 9 days.
She was the daughter of Robert J. Arnot and Sarah Hall Arnot.
June 24th, 1855 she was united in marriage with Barney
Van Nest who passes away May 26, 1906.
"Eight children, five daugthers and three sons survive her.
Mrs. Van Nest was an amiable Christian lady, highly respected
and greatly beloved by her family.  She had been ill for about
22 months, and the last five weeks of her life she suffered
intense pain and distress.  The close of her life was one of
peace and trust in her maker.  At the funeral which was
held Dec. 14, at the M.E. church, Rev. W.J. Cain officiated,
and the interment was made in the Croswell cemetary."
